American Antique Sterling Silver Figural Squirrel Nut Spoon, c. 1880
This is a rare and exceptional serving spoon. It is constructed of numerous pieces and assembled to create this wonderful piece. The hexagonal handle is joined on either end with decorative rondels. The top features a fully cast figure of a squirrel eating a nut. The condition and details are wonderful.
The bowl and transition area are totally gilded and have a shimmering matte finish. The bowl is beautifully pierced in classical styling.
The bowl is also hooded with cast and applied leaves and a chestnut(?).
In the late 19th century, nuts were considered a delicacy and were a popular course. It is no wonder such elaborate servers were made for special occasions.
This rare server is marked on the back 'STERLING/ B1'. It measures 9.75 inches long, weighs 3.60 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
