Vincent Laforme Antique Coin Silver Mustard Jar, Boston, MA, 1847-58

This rare mustard or condiment pot is a beautiful, small example of Boston coin silver. The stepped, pedestal base compliments the shape of the hinged, dome cover. The cover also has a cutout, and the interior is fitted with a clear glass liner which appears old if not original. The simple leaf thumb-piece on the scroll handle complements the repoussé decorations on the body of strawberry vines with leaves, flowers, and berries. The front is engraved with an 'R.S.L.' monogram.

Vincent Laforme, son of a German immigrant silversmith, ran a small shop in Boston during the mid 19th century using only hand-powered tools. He did not achieve the critical mass to compete against the growing factories, such as Gorham, that were turning to power machinery. His pieces are high quality, and his mark is rarely seen today.

This lovely coin silver mustard jar is marked underneath by the Boston retailer ‘LINCOLN & FOSS,' 'PURE COIN,' and with Laforme’s gothic ‘L’ and spread eagle marks. This piece measures 5.25 inches high by 3.75 inches wide across the body and handle, weighs 5.65 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition. The glass has a couple of chips to its rim. The mustard pot comes with a sterling ladle marked 'LINCOLN & FOSS/ STERLING' and is also monogrammed 'RSL.'
