John C. Moore Antique Coin Silver Covered Sugar Bowl, NYC, c. 1850

This rare sugar bowl was made by one of New York City's great silversmiths, John C. Moore. It is technically extremely difficult to have executed with it's bulbous, curved panels. Four of the eight panels are chased with wonderful floral scenes. The front and back panels are chased with foliate scenes around blank areas which have never been monogrammed. Applied around the top rim is a band of foliate design. This is also used around the edge of the octagonal,  paneled, domed base.

The 'S'-scroll handles are cast and applied and covered in leaf decoration. 

The removable, domed cover is also octagonal in shape and chased with floral scenes. The bold finial is of a blossoming blower with a ball.

This stunning sugar bowl is marked underneath 'J. C. MOORE'. It measures 8.5 inches wide across the handles by 7.75 inches high, weighs an impressive 26.26 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
