William Ker Reid George IV Antique Sterling Silver 'Madeira' Decanter Label, London, 1828/29
$0.00
This wonderful label is a lovely stamped example of a large grape vine leaf with a beautifully textured surface. Attached to the grape vine is the original chain with circular links. Pierced by hand across the front is 'MADIERA'. Adding to the beauty is the original gilding to the front and back surfaces and the chain.
William Ker Reid married Mary Barnard, daughter of important silversmith Edward Barnard, in 1812. (Barnard was in partnership with Rebecca Emes at the time.) Reid sold pieces both of of his own making and pieces made by Barnard. As the Barnard firm focused on larger objects and never made many labels, this was likely made by Reid although the quality is high enough that it could be from either shop.
This stunning antique decanter label is fully hallmarked on the front. It measures 3.25 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall, weighs .80 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
