Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard Pair of George III English Sterling Silver Casters, London, 1815, together with 2 identical silver plate examples by Elkington & Co, c. 1849

These exquisite casters are made in an unusual design with cylindrical bodies decorated with an intricate design of a grapes and vines between bands of classical leaves which is also repeated around the base of the pedestal foot. The domed, detachable covers are hand-pierced. The sterling examples are engraved on the base with a crescent armorial crest. Elkington & Co made some of the finest silver plate and the copies are practically identical. The only discernible difference is that the markings are different and the interiors of the silver plate examples are smooth. Without the covers, these rare casters look like miniature goblets with superb quality.

These lovely casters are fully hallmarked. The pair of silver plate examples is marked around the bases with Elkington & Co marks and the 'K' date mark of 1849. The pair of sterling silver casters is fully marked around the bases and the covers are also marked with the "RE/EB' makers mark, the date mark 'U' for 1815 and the lion passant sterling mark. They measures 3.5 inches high and are in wonderful antique condition retaining their original gilt interiors. The pair of sterling casters weigh 6.75 troy ounces.
