Robert Garrard II English Sterling Four-handled Cup, London, c. 1874/75

This lovely vessel is in the rare form of a 4-handled cup. The bold cast double loop handles are covered with rope and rivet decoration. The body of the piece is also decorated with rivets and rosettes. Two panels have blanks (which have never been monogrammed) and a rosette. The other two panels have large fleur-de-lis emblems.

Robert Garrard II became the crown jeweler to her Majesty Queen Victoria and family in 1843. In this capacity, Garrard produced some of the finest 19th century silver ever made. Even their every day object is decidedly above average.

This creative cup is based on medieval designs that were popular at the beginning of the arts and crafts movement. It is quite a design challenge to incorporate so many diverse elements into an effective design. This cup meets that challenge, achieving a balance and elegance. It is a great size to use as a small vase or cache-pot to put potted plants in.

This striking cup is fully marked under the upper outer rim and underneath 'GARRARDS/ PANTON STREET/ LONDON'. There is an area underneath the base which is scratched, probably to remove an engraved number or name. It measures 5.5 inches high and 8 inches across the handles, weighs 24.25 troy ounces and is in very good condition.
