English Antique Sterling Silver Master Salt, Edward Farrell, London, 1818/19

This lovely salt is a great example of early 19th century English silver made by the famous silversmith Edward Farrell. It features intricate scenery on a bulbous body supported by three hoof feet joining at the body with female masks.

The four scenes depicted on the body include two scenes of houses amongst trees, a scene of a warrior with horse receiving papers and a scene of the Judgment of Solomon.

Farrell was a highly creative and important silversmith who sold his most important pieces to the Duke of York through London retailer Kensington Lewis. His masterpiece is generally considered to be the Duke of York's candelabrum/ centerpiece. A candelabrum from the same service is in the collection of the Victorian and Albert museum.

This lovely antique sterling salt is fully hallmarked. It measures 3.25 inches wide by 2.75 inches high, weighs 5.85 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with slight surface wear to the highlights.
