Charles Edwards Pair of English Sterling & Crystal Claret Jugs, London, 1895/96

Claret jugs of this quality are scarce and finding a pair in this condition is quite rare. The large, oval glass bodies are phenomenal: decorated with deep cut engraving allowing their brilliance to sparkle. Even the underside of the glass bases are engraved for added ornamentation. Around the collars are mounted wonderful sterling spouts and handles executed with exceptional detail.

Below the collars are pierced foliate aprons and around the midsections are intricately pierced bands of scrolling foliate arabesques. Not only are these decorative elements, but they also function to strengthen the silver mounts and disperse weight. Another ingenious element to these items is the fitted sterling around the scalloped bases. These not only add beauty but also protect the glass where most vulnerable. The regal appearance is further enhanced by the silver elements being gilded.

These exceptional claret jugs are fully hallmarked. The lid is stamped with the maker's mark, lion passant and year mark. The band is stamped with the maker's mark, lion passant and leopard's head. Both the apron and base are stamped with the maker's mark, lion passant, leopard's head and year mark. They measure 12.5 inches high. With the exception of hard to notice monogram removals, they are in very good/ excellent antique condition.
