Arthur Stone Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Covered Sauce Tureen and Stand, Gardner, MA, c. 1920

This elegant, sauce tureen is an uncommon form and comes with its original stand. The oval shape of the body is simply decorated with a pair of horizontal chased double-lines. This decoration is also used on the detachable cover. A small piece of ivory is used in the construction of the handle so that it doesn't get too hot to handle. The top of the handle is beautifully chased to resemble a flower. 

The rare stand is decorated around its edge with the double-chased lines and the handles are wonderfully pierced and chased.

Arthur J. Stone ran the preeminent arts & crafts silver shop in New England, possibly the country. Items were hand made using traditional silversmithing techniques. An innovator, Stone let the other masters who worked for him sign the items they made. 

Made from heavy gauge silver, these pieces were raised by Herbert Taylor, Stone's 'right hand man' and possibly the most accomplished silversmith who worked for Stone. Taylor was one of only eight silversmiths to win the award of 'Medalist', the highest honor for craft bestowed by the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston. (Stone was the first silversmith to win the award.) 

Both pieces are marked underneath with Stone's trademark, 'STERLING' and 'T' for craftsman Herbert Taylor. The stand measures 10 inches across the handle by 4.75 inches wide. The tureen measures 7.5 inches across the handles by 4.5 inches wide by 5 inches high. This rare tureen and underplate weigh a combined 25.60 troy ounces, have never been engraved and are in excellent antique condition.
