Tuttle Silversmiths Sterling Silver Modernist Covered Bowl, Boston, 1938

A rare example of modernist arts & crafts silver from the firm of Tuttle Silversmiths, this stunning bowl is beautifully designed and very well made.

The cover to the bowl has a slightly domed center with a bold ball finial handle. This striking ornament has a tiny bead on top and is bordered around its base with a row of beads. It not only reflects its surroundings, but also reflects itself on the surface of the cover.

The round bowl is also quite stunning. It has lovely applied curved handles in an art deco style with a row of graduated beads above them.

The stepped pedestal base has four decorative appliques of beading around the first platform of the foot.

Complimenting the exquisite shapes and decorative elements is the beautifully hammered surface.

This rare bowl is marked underneath with Tuttle's trademark along with 'FR' within a crescent over the Roman numeral 'V'. Tuttle was unique in dating their silver based on presidents dates in office. In this case, the 5th year of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, 1938. It measures 11.5 inches across the handles by 6 inches to the top of the finial, weighs 34.15 troy ounces and is in excellent condition with a couple minor interior scratches from use.
