Cellini Shop Sterling & Rosewood Art Deco Candelabra, Evanston, IL, c. 1930

This pair of sterling candelabra are great representations of American art deco design influenced by the Danish modern movement.

The candelabra are held through the rich-looking shaped rosewood bases by pins and screws. Four silver bun feet raise the bases from the table.

The domed bases of the candelabra conform to the shape of the rosewood platform. Emanating from the bases are wonderful displays of emerging flowers. Two arms covered in leaves rise out and upwards to drip pans shaped as four-lobed flowers. Rising from their centers are the floriform candle holders.

Also contributing to the artistic display is the use of hammering to the surfaces. Some areas are purposely exhibiting prevalent hammer marks while other areas are smooth giving nice contrast and definitions to the various pieces.

The Cellini Shop played a unique and important role in the American 'Arts & Crafts' movement by being one of the first firms to adopt 'modern Danish' designs early in 20th century. In 1934 they created 'Cellini Craft' in Evanston, Illinois to produce their high-end silverware and a less expensive line, 'Argental', that was made from aluminum. While cheap, mass produced silver in the the modern Danish taste is fairly common (International Silver Co. made a lot), American examples of this expensive hand wrought silver are quite rare.

The candelabra are marked underneath the drip pans 'Cellini Shop/ HANDWROUGHT/ STERLING' and with the model number 'S21'. They measure 6.5 inches wide by 9.25 inches tall and are in excellent condition.
