Carl Poul Petersen, Pair of 'Blossom' Design Compotes, Montreal, Canada, Mid-20th Century

Stunning hammering is on display on both sides of the shaped, petal-formed dishes. Swooping handles are formed with leaf thumb pieces giving way to blossoms - a lovely motif found in many of Petersen's works. The columns have four leaves growing upwards, raising the dishes while blossoms hang downward over the domed bases.

Petersen is considered the most important silversmith working in Canada during the mid-20th century. Having trained with Georg Jensen in Copenhagen, he emigrated to Canada in 1929. Due to the depression, it was only after the war that he could set up his own shop, which became quite successful.

These delightful serving dishes measure 7.5 inches across the handles and dishes by 7.25 inches high and weigh a combined 36.35 troy ounces. They are marked on the back with Petersen's trademark, the Canadian sterling mark, and 'PETERSEN/ HAND MADE/ STERLING.' They have never been monogrammed and are in excellent condition with a bit of light scratching from use.
