Wood & Hughes Antique Coin Silver Figural Child's Mug, NYC, c. 1845-50

This is a large and very rare child's mug. This stunning mug features some of the finest repoussé work obviously from a very skilled silversmith working in the venerable shop of Wood & Hughes.

There is an S-shaped handle covered with leaf decoration. Fine beading ornaments the base and upper rim of the body.

The beautiful bucolic scene is executed as a landscape around the entire body of the cylindrical mug. Amongst trees is a farmhouse on a small hill with a fence and a large, leaning tree in the foreground.

Rarely does one fine repoussé figural animals and this example is stunning. It depicts the full figures of a mare and her foal in a heartwarming pose.

This lovely mug is marked underneath with the early Wood & Hughes trademark with pseudo marks and with a 'D' (likely for 'dollar', i.e., 'coin' silver). It measures 5 inches wide across the handle by 4.75 inches tall to the top of the handle and weighs 7.2 troy ounces. It is in good antique condition with a small repair at the base of the handle. The cup has a lovely (later) gilt interior and has never been monogrammed.
