Whiting Antique Sterling Silver Japonesque Trophy Pitcher, NYC, NY, c. 1883

With splendid 3-dimensional decoration, this stunning presentation pitcher is a beautiful form. One side has a wonderful scene of a large iris which is applied along with acid-etched leaves. The opposite side has an impressive, large, applied dragonfly. Stippled corners resemble sand. The base of the neck and the applied foot display shippo designs, and the neck and rim are decorated with wave-like features. The design of this extraordinary pitcher is attributed to Charles Osborne.

An engraved presentation reads: "DRAYTON vs. JAFFRAY/ WON BY." We have not identified this event, so we wonder if the pitcher was ordered and created, but the event didn't occur. Or maybe it did, and the winner was never engraved on the pitcher. There is no indication of a removal.

This wonderful trophy is marked underneath with Whiting's trademark and "STERLING/ 1008/ B." It measures 7.5 inches across the spout and handle by just shy of 9.75 inches tall. It weighs an impressive 41.5 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition with some scratching on the handle.
