Vanderslice and Co Antique Coin Silver Bowl, San Francisco, CA, c. 1860's

This bowl is most likely a large waste bowl. It is very heavy and elegant. The simple pedestal bowl is bordered with an applied band of Greek-key design. This same banding is also used to border the top rim and also incorporates a row of fine beading. A beautiful, intricately engraved monogram stands out against the plain body. We believe it may be two crossed J's and a T.

William K. Vanderslice came to San Francisco in 1857 and developed a reputation for creating some if the finest silver in the city. Some of their designs resemble Gorham, but are often heavier - as is the case with this bowl. The shop is also known for particularly fine engraving.

This lovely bowl is marked underneath with the Vanderslice trademark along with the famous San Francisco retailer 'GEO. C SHREVE & Co'. It measures 5.5 inches in diameter by 4.5 inches high, weighs 14 troy ounces and it in excellent antique condition.
