Shiebler 'Homeric' or 'Medallion' Antique Sterling Silver Ruler, New York City, c. 1880's

This wonderful example of Shiebler 'Homeric' pattern silver features two large portraits of warriors wearing helmets with dragons on the top. These medallions, along with classically inspired aesthetic movement engraving, are set against a hammered background.

The top edge is beveled and the bottom edge has an applied irregular border. The right-sided handle is decoratively pierced. The back of the ruler is engraved for 9 inches with each inch section showing various measurements.

This lovely sterling silver ruler is marked with Shiebler's trademark, 'STERLING', and by the New York retailer 'THEO. B. STARR'. It measures 10.25 inches long, weighs 3.75 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with very slight unevenness noticeable only from the back.
