Shiebler 'Homeric' Medallion Antique Sterling Silver Large Compote, NYC, c. 1880's

This is a very unusual centerpiece compote in the rare 'Homeric' line which was produced in both flatware and holloware by George Shiebler from New York. The flatware is very uncommon and the holloware even rarer. This bowl is an exquisite example.

Various aesthetic movement ornamental elements are chased on a hammered background. Shiebler's designs are very unique, imaginative and beautifully executed. The domed pedestal base is strengthened with an applied band decorated with groups of horizontal and vertical lines. Six chased leaves hang downward from aesthetic chased design encircling the base of the pedestal. Four portrait medallions decorate the conical shaped column.

The bowl has a striking border with an irregular top edge. Dramatic chased leaves separate the 12 portrait medallions. All unique and facing different directions, these portraits are of various classical representations.

The interior of the bowl is decorated with wonderful leaves bordering a ring of aesthetic design which contains a large portait medallion of a warrior. The helmut is adorned with a small dragon. Chased next to the medallion is the Greek word 'XAPIE' which means 'grace'.

This stunning bowl is marked underneath with Shiebler's trademark 'S' with wings and 'STERLING/ 441'. It measures 9 inches wide by 4.75 inches high, weighs 25.30 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
