Puiforcat Art Deco Mahogany and Sterling Silver Tray, Mexico, 1942-45

A large and striking example of great Art Deco design, this mahogany tray is beautiful with curved sides and a wide 1.25 inch border. Applied around the border are 46 demi-spherical silver studs with 8 more decorating the bold handles. On each of the handles, two of the studs go through the wood and are attached underneath with identical studs hiding nuts that secure the handles. The ends of the flat handles scroll around a tubular piece of wood.

The bold design of the silver against the exotic wood is stunning.

Jean Puiforcat was the undisputed master of the Art Deco period in French silver.  His stunning geometric designs can be found in many important museum collections.  During the Second World War, he set up shop in Mexico City at Parque Melchor Ocampo 64.  He was deeply influenced by Mexican art and design - as can be seen clearly in this tray.  His work from this period is rarely seen on the market.    

This rare tray is marked on the handles and measures 29.5 inches long across the handles by 14 inches wide 1.625 inches high. The varnished wood surface has been freshened.  There are a few scratches from use and it is in otherwise excellent condition.
