John Wendt 'Bird' Pattern Antique Sterling Silver Oyster Forks, set of 12, New York City, c. 1870's

John Wendt made some wonderful silver and his 'Bird' pattern is no exception. These lovely two-tined oyster forks are individually quite rare and and to see a set of 12 is extraordinary. The exotic pattern is that of a bird among foliage reaching towards a cluster of berries. The backs of the handles are engraved 'EBC'.

Bird was one of the first American flatware patterns in the Japanese taste, similar to Tiffany's Japanese pattern (the first) and Wood & Hughes's Japanese pattern. It is rarely seen on the market today, especially in this wonderful crisp condition.

This is one of the earliest forms of oyster fork ever made, and we believe Wendt's first oyster fork design. We've had these in his medallion pattern also. They would also work nicely for hors d'oeuvres, olives or fruit or as small buffet forks.

These sterling forks are marked on the back 'STERLING/ PATENT' and by the Cincinnati, Ohio retailer 'E.E. ISBELL & Co'. They measure just under 6 inches long, weigh a combined 7.70 troy ounces and are in excellent condition.
