Gorham Antique Coin Silver Waste Bowl, Providence, RI, c. 1867

This stunning bowl was once part of an extraordinary coffee service. It exhibits wonderful repoussé sprays of flowers and chased leaves and classical decoration against a textured background.

A row of beading decorates the rim while fine beading decorates the four applied bun feet. Beautifully cast griffins with free-swinging rings create the bold handles. One cartouche has never been engraved while another bears a 'WH' monogram. Even the interior is lovely with its original gilt surface.

Gorham's records indicate the bowl had an original factory cost of about $50.00 and priced higher at retail, quite a sum for that time.  The costing record is dated 1867 and Gorham switched to the sterling standard in 1868, so the date of this piece is quite specific.

This wonderful bowl is marked with Gorham's trademark and 'COIN/ 140'. It measures 6 inches wide by 4.25 inches high, weighs 14.30 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
