Eaton, Gordon & Bogert 950 Silver Antique Figural Vase, Newburgh, NY, 1856-60, probably retailed by Ball, Black & Co.

This stunning cast figural vase is by the rare partnership of Eaton, Gordon & Bogert which operated in Newburgh, NY for the short period of 1856-60.

The central globe is adorned on each side with a partially nude figure; one side of a male and the other of a female. The conical-shaped pedestal is decorated around the base with classical leaves. This conical shape is inversely used at the top along with a flaring rim and narrow opening to hold a flower. Contributing to the support are two shaped rods attached at the base, the top of the pedestal and the top of the sphere. Emanating from this structure are two magnificent cast swans with spreading wings. The casting and chased details are lovely.

On one side of the vase is an engraved 'HWH' monogram above the female figure and below around the base the inscription 'LESLIE E. MILLER/ FROM HER GRAND MOTHER TUCKER FEB 25, 1903'. The first monogram appears original and the presentation is later inscribed.

There is a brief period in the late 1850's when Ball, Black & Co. is retailing 950 grade silver. Ball, Black & Co., the leading jeweler in New York City, was being threatened by a new luxury jeweler, Tiffany. To compete, Ball, Black & Co. briefly went to the .950 standard to distinguish their silver from Tiffany's. This wonderful vase was made by one of their suppliers during that period and was most likely sold by them.

This exceptional vase is marked underneath 'E, G & B' and '950/100', a higher grade of silver than the sterling standard of 925/1000. It measures 11.75 inches high, weighs 24.65 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
