William Chawner English Antique Sterling Silver Gilt Ice Cream Serving Spade, London, 1816/17

This wonderful server is made from very heavy gauge silver and is in the shape of a shovel originally made for pastry or ice cream. It is in a classic 'Kings' pattern with a bold shell at the top and a reeded edge. A crest of a raised arm dressed in armor is engraved at the top.

The back of the handle repeats the front design with an added shell at the base of the bowl.

Chawner ran the finest flatware firm in late Georgian England and this is a very fine example from the shop. The kings pattern became popular in London about this time after being ordered by the royal family c. 1808.  This is a nice early example of that pattern in a rare serving form.

This lovely server is fully hallmarked. It measures 10.5 inches, weighs an impressive 6.50 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with light wear to the later, but pleasing, gilding.
