Durgin Antique Sterling Silver Aesthetic Pitcher, Concord, NH, c. 1870s

This magnificent pitcher is executed in a unique triangular form with a bulbous, undulating body that only a highly skilled silversmith could have achieved. Stippling is used as a background for the exceptional decoration including a bird in flight on the front. One side is covered in stunning overlapping foliage and another bird in flight. The other side panel is executed with different foliage with a different bird perched on a branch. The neck features four birds chasing insects. A curved, bamboo-like handle is attached to the body next to another bird.

This rare pitcher is marked underneath with Durgin's early trademark of a bird in a wreath along with 'STERLING/ 925/1000' and by the New Orleans retailer 'M. SCOOLER'. It measures 7.5 inches across the handle and spout by 8.25 inches tall, weighs 22.40 troy ounces and aside from a dent to the top of the handle where your thumb would rest, it is in excellent antique condition.
