Dominick & Haff (attr) Antique Sterling (attr) Silver and Other Metals Hand Mirror, NYC, NY, c. 1880s

This exceptional hand mirror is the loveliest we have ever seen. A hammered surface delivers a graceful elegance upon which various aesthetic movement design elements are applied.

Copper sprigs and a squirrel, along with a copper exotic bird, decorate the front, oval frame which holds the original, beveled glass mirror. The back has an applied copper bamboo shoot with leaves and a small sprig, along with a lovely silver, copper, and brass butterfly. Another exotic bird, a butterfly, and a couple of small sprigs are applied to the handle, which has a lovely foliate decoration at the top.

This rare, antique hand mirror is unmarked, but we are very confident that it is sterling and was produced by Dominick & Haff based on the quality, style, and use of appliques one finds on other marked items by the firm. We have not taken it apart to see if it is marked on the interior. It measures just over 10 inches long by 4.5 inches wide and is in excellent condition with slight wear to the glass.
