Dominick and Haff Sterling & Other Metals Antique Dish, NYC, NY, 1880

Exceptionally designed and executed, this dish is a mixed-metal stunner from the aesthetic movement. The dish is square with concave sides between the pointed corners. The center is a round, plain dish which emphasizes the stunning framework of its surrounding. The flawless execution of these shapes alone required a talented master silversmith.

Various exotic plants and animals executed in either brass or copper decorate the piece. They are all hand-finished for detail. Irregular placement of the appliques against the hand-chased foliage background is quite intriguing. This dish features a beetle made of brass and a fern and scene of a bird eating berries in copper. A magnificent butterfly is executed in copper with silver decoration.

This lovely sterling silver dish is marked with Dominick & Haff's trademark with the 1881 date and 'STERLING'. It measures 6.25 inches square by .75 inches high, weighs 6.95 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
