Black, Starr & Frost Antique 'Martelé' Sterling Silver Service Plates, NYC, c. 1905, bearing the Craven family arms

Notify me when similar is available:

We have 3 of these service plates available. They are stunning examples of art nouveau hand-raised and chased silver, as high in quality and craftsmanship as Gorham's Martelé line. The undulating edges are irregularly executed. The wide rims are spectacular works of art incorporating poppy leaves and flowers flowing up from the interiors.

A beautiful armorial achievement is engraved in each of the centers. It includes a winged griffin crest above a coat of arms and a ribbon bearing the motto 'VIRTUS IN ACTIONE CONSISTIT' for the Craven family.

Enhancing the beauty of the plates are the shimmering surfaces from wonderful hammering. This process makes the plates sparkle and the flowers emerge from their surface. These exceptional plates can also be used as circular serving trays.

These stunning plates are marked on the back 'BLACK. STARR & FROST, NEW YORK/ STERLING/ 6561/ 11in'. They weigh a very impressive 26.40 troy ounces each and are in excellent condition with very light scratches to the interior.
