Bailey & Co. Antique Coin Silver Covered Jug, Philadelphia, PA, c. 1840's

This large and magnificent covered jug would have been used for cold beverages such as beer or cider etc. as the handle has no insulators. It is a rare form of exceptional gauge silver and unusually large size. The tapered, cylindrical body is decorated with two sections of deeply incised lines creating nine horizontal reedings at the top and ten above the base. A beautifully engraved "JE' monogram within a decorative, octagonal shield is encompassed by wonderful sprigs of laurel.

The hinged, shaped cover is flat and decorated like the body with four reeded rings surrounding the same engraving as on the body.

An attached, bold handle is flat on the sides and slightly curved on the interior and exterior. The hinge mechanism is quite lovely with extending rods that pivot on pegs when opened with the thumb-piece. The thumb-piece is slightly curved so it rests beautifully in the curve of the handle - another indication of great design.

This wonderful jug is stamped underneath 'BAILEY & CO/ PHILAD.'. It measures 8.25 inches across the handle and spout by 7.75 inches tall, weighs an impressive 39.80 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
