William Plummer George III Antique English Sterling Silver Cream Pail, London, 1773/74
$0.00
This rare and stunning little cream pail is made with an open wirework design and cobalt blue glass insert. The twisted wire swing handle is meant to resemble rope. This decoration is also used around the top edge of the basket and around the top of the foot. Eighteen shaped vertical wires construct the sides.
Applied to the vertical wires is a single, crawling vine with offshoots with leaves and berries. The fineness of the work is extraordinary.
It is believed these small rare pails were used for serving Cornish 'clotted' cream which was spread on scones and berries.
This lovely pail is fully hallmarked around the base. It measures 3 inches wide by 3.75 inches high to the top of the handle and the silver weighs 1.45 troy ounces. The glass insert is probably an old replacement and both the glass and silver are in excellent condition.
