Tiffany & Co Antique Sterling Silver Porringer, New York City, c. 1901

This is a lovely example of a child's porringer from the turn of the 20th century. The bulbous bowl is plain with a rolled edge.  It is inscribed on the front 'George Henry Southard III/ February 12th 1901/ From/ George H. Southard'.

The wonderful cast and pierced handle features 2 child mermaids in a dramatic renaissance inspired setting of strapwork, foliate devices, shells, grapes and masks. This is a very fine, bold example of Paulding Farnham's (Tiffany's lead designer of the period) work in the renaissance taste - we've never seen a porringer quite like it.

It is marked underneath 'TIFFANY & CO/9421 MAKERS 8148/STERLING SILVER/925-1000/T/3 GILLS. Handle on Tiffany Sterling Porringer, c. 1901 The measurements are 7.5 inches across the handle (the bowl is 5 inches in diameter) by 1.5 inches high.  This lovely sterling porringer weighs 7.2 troy ounces and is in very good condition.
