Tiffany & Co Antique Aesthetic Movement Sterling Silver and Cut Glass Flask in the Japanese Taste, New York City, c. 1877

This is a lovely flask of excellent quality. The thick glass is deeply hand-cut to create patterns of various geometric designs. A nice swirl pattern encircles the body above the smooth area of the bottom half.

The screw-off cover is totally removable from the silver threaded gilt collar attached to the opening and is fitted with a cork to prevent leaks. It is dome-shaped with a hammered surface . A stretched out frog is applied to the top.

The silver base which fits around the smooth area of the body was also used as a cup. It has a hammered body and a wire rim around the top. For decoration , acid engraving techniques are incorporated to create the flat leaves. There is one on the front and one on the back. They are further gilded and hand-chased for details.

A branch with berries and a large leaf is applied to the front. Once again, partial gilding is used to highlight the branches and leaf and the interior is gilded also

This stunning flask is marked underneath 'TIFFANY & CO/ STERLING-SILVER/ 4715 M 8001/ 2046/ 8'. Pattern number 4715 was designed in 1877. It is also marked '3/4 GILL'. It measures 2.5 inches wide by just under 5 inches high and is in excellent condition with light wear to the gilding.
