The Loring Andrews Company Antique Sterling Silver Repoussé Compote, Cincinnati, OH, c. 1910

This is a small and stunning compote. The fine details and workmanship are beautiful. The bowl is ornamented with what is referred to as 'Landscape' or 'Castle' design.

In this example, a castle with a bridge and stream amongst trees is depicted against a stippled background.

The opposite side varies with the execution of the structures and foliage.

To the left of the castles on each side are repousséd figures of birds.

The base and stem are covered in repoussé swirling foliate design

Loring Andrews & Company were one of the great Cincinnati companies who 'manufactured and dealt in jewelry, sold and repaired watches and clocks, and dealt in imported and domestic ceramics, glass and silver".(1) They retailed silver flatware and holloware furnished by companies such as Durgin, Schultz & Co, Dominick & Haff, Gorham, Goodnow & Jenks and a few others. They 'became the authorized dealer of silver by S. Kirk & Son (Baltimore) sometime after 1915'.(2) They became The Loring Andrews & Company in 1903, so this vase postdates that.(3)

This stunning compote is marked "The LORING ANDREWS CO/ STERLING/ CINCINNATI/ U.S.A/ 58'. It measures 7.25 inches tall to the top of the handles by 7.75 inches across the handles, weighs 11.65 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
