Antique Sheffield Plate Pair of Rare Monteith Wine Coolers, Sheffield, c. 1830

This form of wine cooler is exceedingly rare and beautiful. The detachable monteith collar has a flaring rim with four cutouts for hanging glasses. Moldings and shells are applied around the tops of the rims.

The shaped bodies have a wonderful mirror-like quality to the surface. Some of the finest castings create the handles and feet. Spreading foliate and scroll decoration create the handles.

Also applied are the decorative cartouches around the engraved crest and coat-of- arms. (We believe this is a less documented branch of the Horne family.)

As with the handles, the feet are also very impressive features. Bordered by scroll devices, they are formed as curved, overlapping shells and are quite striking.

This extraordinary pair of wine coolers consists of the bodies, detachable collars and inserts. They are all numbered with either a 1 or 2 so we know they are all original to each other. They measure 11.75 inches across the handles by 10.75 inches high and are in in very good/ excellent antique condition with two very small losses to the applique.

Although very hard to see, a small piece of the lower left leaf in photo to right is missing. This almost unnoticeable loss occurs twice on one collar.
