Arthur Stone Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Decorated Water Pitcher, Gardner, MA, c. 1920's

This lovely pitcher is a wonderful example of great arts & crafts silver. Arthur Stone based many of his designs on traditional forms and enhanced them with modern interpretation. The vase shaped body is decorated with convex fluting which required great skill to execute. These flutes protrude from the rounded lower section of the body and get more pronounced at the shoulder and create a wonderful panel shape.

Outlining the panels are lovely double-line chased decoration. A striking 'AW' monogram adorns one of the large panels.

Other decorative elements include a bold handle with thumb-piece, an applied band around the rim and a circular, stepped footed base. Lovely soft hammering, for which items from Stone's shop are so famous, creates a beautiful surface.

This wonderful pitcher is marked underneath with the Stone mark and 'STERLING/ H'. The 'H' denotes work by Arthur Hartwell who achieved Master Craftsman status within the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston. The pitcher measures 9.25 inches tall to the top of the thumb piece. It weighs 26.50 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with minor surface abrasions from use.
