Arthur Stone Sterling Silver Hand Wrought Arts & Crafts After-Dinner Coffee Set, Gardner, MA, 1912

This beautiful after-dinner coffee set was entirely hand-wrought in the shop of Arthur Stone in Gardner, Massachusetts. It exhibits light planishing marks and a soft finish for which Stone's shop is so famous. This diminutive set is a wonderful example of the striking, elegant forms produced in silver by Arthur Stone. It is engraved underneath 'FCD from EGH June 1912.' An attached lid is slightly domed and surmounted with an original wood finial.

According to the Arthur Stone Archives at the Archives of American Art, this service was photographed and cataloged as a 'Black Coffee Set Round 1912.' (1)

Stone ran one of the country's most important arts & crafts shops. Items were hand-made using traditional silversmithing techniques. An innovator, Stone let the other masters who worked for him sign the items they made. All three pieces were raised by Arthur Hartwell, a Master Craftsman in Boston's Society of Arts & Crafts. This wonderful coffee set is marked underneath with the Stone trademark, 'STERLING,' and 'H' for Hartwell. The pot measures 8.5 inches tall. The set weighs a combined 30.80 troy ounces and is in very good/ excellent antique condition with two very small dings in the spout.
