Gorham Antique Copper and Applied Silver Tray, Providence, RI, 1882

This is a small and beautiful tray. Due to its warm color copper became quite fashionable. It also made a dramatic background for silver appliques.

The shaped tray with raised sides has a wonderful surface of rich red and brown patinated copper. The sky has an applied silver bird in flight. The main scene at the base of the tray has a Chinese figure walking along a pebbled ground. Ahead of him is an exotic plant with an owl perched on one of the branches. A frog is seated beneath the plant

This lovely tray is marked underneath with the anchor mark used on copper wares and 'GORHAM CO/ B65/ O'. It measures 7.5 inches long by 6 inches wide and is in very good antique condition with its original surface including typical wear and stains to the original red patination.
