Tiffany & Co Antique Sterling Silver Porringer, New York City, 1888

This wonderful example of a child's porringer features an elaborate foliate design around the body's side. This 3-dimensional design consists of repeating, scrolling leaves encircling flowers in bloom. The attached handle is beautifully adorned with acanthus leaf decoration and small buds at the corners where it meets the rim. Underneath, the base is inscribed "Herbert Bramwell Shaw/ Feby 11th 1888."

Herbert Bramwell Shaw was born on February 11, 1888 and died Sept 17, 1978. He married Alice de Vermandois Sohier on April 30, 1910 and worked in insurance for the Boston branch of Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland.

In 1878, Tiffany & Co. was the first American company to win a Grand Prize for silverware at a World's Fair, prompting the famous English designer, Christopher Dresser, to call them, "the first silversmiths of the world." 

 It is marked underneath "TIFFANY & CO/ 7520 M 8545/ STERLING-SILVER/ 1 PT." The diameter of the bowl is 4.75 inches, and the handle adds another 2.25 inches. It weighs 9.15 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
