Samuel Kirk & Son Pair of Antique Sterling Silver Oval Serving Dishes, Baltimore, MD, 1891- c. 1905

These rare bowls are exquisite examples of Kirk silver. We have never seen this model of fruit or berry bowl before. The bowls are oval in shape and have dramatic lobed sections emanating from the bases of the bowls. The rims are dramatic scalloped edges with cast and applied scrolls with scallop shell edges. The lobes of the bodies are decorated with vertical displays of various flowers and foliage. All the lobes are of differently executed scenes. Engraved 'NHM' monograms are framed within a beautiful foliate wreath. The opposite sides of the bowl have never been monogrammed within their wreath cartouches.

Stunning cast and applied scroll handles are adorned with dense foliage. The design is incorporated into the lobes by continuing the motif with repoussé flowers and leaves.

The oval, pedestal bases have a shaped edge with cast and applied foliate decoration.

The technique of casting and applying decorative elements to the edges of pieces adds strength and stability. With these bowls, it also adds stunning beauty and incredible weight.

These rare antique sterling bowls are marked underneath 'S. Kirk & Son' and with the sterling standard '925/1000'. They measure 11.75 inches long across the handles by 6 inches wide by 3.5 inches high, weigh a total 45.95 troy ounces and are in excellent antique condition.
