Gorham Antique Sterling Silver and Other Metals Aesthetic Movement Fruit Bowl, Providence, RI, 1881

This is a stunning example of Gorham's mixed metal products incorporating copper, brass and sterling elements.

Resting on three splayed feet, the bowl is executed with a striking hammered surface of irregular blows resembling a honeycomb pattern which acts as a lovely background to the decoration.

Two exceptional, 3-dimensional scenes of applied work create stunning aesthetic designs. One is of a strawberry vine with the vine and clusters of strawberries executed in copper while the leaves are created in sterling. This is designed to appear growing from inside the bowl with the vine emanating from the interior and leaves folding over the rim.

On the opposing side, a branch with plums seems to grow from the interior. Here the vine and leaves are executed in copper and the cherries in sterling. As added decoration, a sterling figure of a bee has been applied to the leaves.

Between these areas are applied birds, a fly, a butterfly and a dragonfly executed in copper and brass.

This rare mixed metal bowl is marked with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING & OTHER METALS/ 1725' and with the 1881 'N' date mark. It measures 10.5 inches at its widest point by 3.75 inches high, weighs 21.45 troy ounces and is in very good/ excellent antique condition.
