Black, Starr and Frost (retailer) Antique Sterling Silver Cake Saw, NYC, NY, c. 1880

This magnificent cake saw is a rare aesthetic example with an unusual shaped handle engraved with exotic fruit and flowers along with a small bird underneath an engraved 'A' initial.

The blade has a serrated top edge for cutting and a smooth bottom edge for serving. It is engraved on one side with a central, round medallion featuring a bird standing among branches with its wings spread. Other exotic designs decorate the blade including a butterfly next to a bamboo tree.

Stamped on the back of the blade is the famous NYC retailer, 'Black, Starr & Frost' and 'STERLING'. This rare Japonesque design server measures 12 inches long, weighs 5.05 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
