Gorham Mfg. Co. Antique Coin Silver Figural Centerpiece or 'Fruit Stand', Providence, RI, c. 1867

This exceptional, tall centerpiece is a rare example of Gorham coin silver. Neoclassical ornamentation incorporated into the design creates stunning imagery.

The tall centerpiece rises from the base with three block-style feet attached to a circular platform with a matte finish and light gilding. The center of the pedestal is attached to the base of the bowl and has three flowing branch-like devices that spread out displaying bold flowers.

Large paw feet attached to the base are the foundation of the wonderful outside supports. Exceptional cast and hand chased details portray iconic masks of women with flowing hair above foliate design. These columns attach to a wide ring which holds the bowl. This ring is ornamented with beautiful flowing classical arabesques emanating from classical masks above hanging anthemion devices.

The large bowl has a deep center and wide spreading rim. The exterior and interior have a matte finish with the interior enhanced with lovely gilding. Applied at the interior rim is a wonderful 'DJAH' monogram. A rare and stunning centerpiece, themes of classicism and beauty are brilliantly designed and executed.

Gorhams records indicate the number 360 'fruit stand' was first costed on November 21, 1866. The first example was made by Henry S. Nicholds, an important silversmith who in 1870 became a foreman. It took 53 hours to assemble and 62.5 hours to hand chase the details to the castings. Due to the great amount of labor and weight of the silver, it has a remarkably high wholesale cost of $329.01.(1)

This centerpiece is marked underneath with Gorham's trademark along with the model number '360' and by the NY retailer 'T. KIRKPATRICK'. It measures 14.75 inches high by 13 inches in diameter and weighs 114.40 troy ounces.
