Porter Blanchard 'Lotus' Pattern Sterling Tazza, Pasadena, CA, 2nd Quarter, 20th Century

Silver holloware in the 'Lotus' pattern from the shop of Porter Blanchard in Burbank, California is extremely rare. Over the years we've been in business, we have been fortunate enough to acquire a few of examples in this pattern. All examples were wonderfully designed and of great quality. This is a stunning tazza constructed of six parts assembled together.

The petal shaped, wide dome base is applied to a flat band bordering the edge. One of the lobed panels is engraved with a Gothic 'W' initial.

Two spool devices separated by a circular disc create the stem The circular device is a lovely design addition and assists in the handling of the tazza. Both sides of the circular device are decorated with eight lines. The shallow bowl is wide, has a shaped edge like the base and is also decorated with eight incised lines on the underside. This rare piece of holloware is a striking example of arts and crafts silver with overall, shimmering hammer marks.

In 1923, Porter Blanchard moved to Burbank, California and was joined in 1925 by his brother Richard and his father George, who had worked for Arthur Stone before setting up his own shop in Gardner, MA and training his sons as silversmiths.

This beautiful sterling silver tazza is marked underneath 'PORTER BLANCHARD/ STERLING'. It is also stamped with an unidentified mark; most likely one of the craftsman who worked on this piece. It measures 8.25 inches in diameter by 4.5 inches high, weighs 17.45 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
