Jones, Ball & Co Antique Coin Silver Covered Dish with Underplate, Boston, 1853-55

This is an early and exquisite example of Boston coin silver. The octagonal form is exceptionally executed and made with heavy gauge silver. Each of the raised panels is engraved with stunning floral scenes aside from one panel which is engraved with the initial 'S'.

Applied to two edges are raised pieces, also engraved. The cover has cutouts on its outer edge to fit onto these pieces to keep it secure on the bowl. The cover is also quite an achievement with its octagonal shape and plain, stepped surface leading up to the dome. Stunning engraving decorates the dome and finial surmounted with a simple ball.

The raised sides of the plate curve outward and are decorated and strengthened by two applied wires around the outer edge. Beautiful engraving of matching floral scenes decorate each of the panels.

This magnificent covered dish and plate are marked underneath 'JONES, BALL & CO/ BOSTON/ PURE SILVER COIN'. The covered dish measures 6.5 inches wide by 5 inches high, weighs 18.80 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition although the interior has many scratches from use. The plate measures 7.75 inches in diameter by 1 inch high, weighs 8.50 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
