John Wendt "Ram's Head" Antique Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs, New York City, c. 1870's

These rare serving tongs are stunning. The bold pattern incorporates figural ram's heads at the tops of the handles above circular discs. This unusual design is enhanced with classical ornamentation. Classical details also decorate the interiors of the handles. The shaped elbow is engraved with a 'KAF' monogram. There is an original attached collar which keeps the handles aligned and secure.

The pierced blades are wonderful. They are both engraved on their exterior with lovely foliate decoration and pierced. The top blade has a rolled edge to hold food in place.

These rare serving tongs are marked '925/ PATENT. They measure 10.25 inches long, weigh 6.55 troy ounces and are in very good antique condition.
