Karl Leinonen Arts and Crafts Sterling Silver Porringer, Boston, 1908

This magnificent porringer has a beautifully pierced handle. The hand-raised bowl shimmers with overall hammering and the interior of the bowl has a raised, dome center. The front is engraved 'MELVILLE TERRY NICHOLS JR. and the underside is engraved 'September 8, 1908/ from/ Grandfather and Grandmother Lawrence.'

Leinonen, originally from Finland, is one of only eight silversmiths to be elevated to 'Medalist Craftsman,' the highest honor bestowed by the venerable Society of Arts & Crafts in Boston.

Melville Nichols, Jr. was born on September 8, 1908 and received this wonderful gift from his Grandparents, William Badger Lawrence and Alice May Sears Lawrence.(1)

This lovely porringer is marked with Leinonen's early 'L' mark and 'STERLING. It measures 7.5 inches long across the handle by 1.5 inches high, weighs 9.15 troy ounces, and is in excellent antique condition.
