Fletcher and Gardiner Antique Coin Silver Beaker, Philadelphia, PA, c. 1815-20

The barrel-shaped body of this rare American silver beaker is hand-raised and exhibits wonderful hammering on its interior. One side is engraved 'J. Hall' and the other 'C.G. Hall/ to/ J.H. Clapp/ 1849/ Winthrop L. Clapp.' J. Hall would have been the original owner of the beaker, and the other engravings represent the successive owners. Great examples of silver from Fletcher & Gardiner are rarely seen on the market, and this beaker/ cup is quite lovely. 

Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner ran the most important silversmithy of the young republic, receiving commissions to make the most significant presentation silver of their day, including The DeWitt Clinton Urns (Erie Canal, now at the Met), The George Armistead Punch Service (Commander at Fort McHenry, now at the Smithsonian), The Isaac Hull Urn (Commander of the Constitution, now in the Naval Historical Foundation's collection), etc.

This lovely beaker is marked underneath 'FLETCHER & GARDINER./ PHILADa.' It measures 2.75 inches wide at the top by just shy of 3.5 inches tall, weighs 4.10 troy ounces, and is in very good antique condition.
