Porter Blanchard Hand Wrought Sterling Silver Salt and Pepper Shakers – 2 pair, c. 1930's
The shop of Porter Blanchard from Burbank, California created great hand wrought arts and crafts silver. Fully
handmade and very elegant, these lovely shakers exhibit that wonderful shimmering quality found on Blanchard's hammered surfaces. Of vase form, these traditional, yet
modern shakers have ovoid finials and a drawn band foot. Subtle surface hammering along with graceful design and proportions make these wonderful examples of Porter
Blanchard's arts and crafts silver.
Porter Blanchard, his brother Richard and sister Ida learned their trade from their father, George Porter Blanchard (who
worked for Arthur Stone from 1906-09) in Gardner, Mass. The three siblings were Members of the Society of Arts & Crafts. In 1923, Porter Blanchard moved to Burbank,
California and was joined in 1925 by his brother and father. Richard worked in the Burbank shop until 1930. Porter and
his shop became very successful. Known as 'the silversmith of the stars', Porter Blanchard sold to many of Hollywood's elite – one of his major clients being Joan Crawford.
These beautiful sterling silver shakers are marked with the shop's trademark, a profile of a silversmith at work inside a
square, and are also stamped 'HANDMADE/ STERLING/ PORTER BLANCHARD'. They measure 4.75 inches high and weigh 5.5 troy ounces per pair, are in excellent condition
and have never been engraved or monogrammed.
