Albert Coles Coin Silver Fish Slice, c. 1850’s
Albert Coles of New York produced great flatware and holloware. This wonderful piece is an excellent example of a fish slice with nautically inspired design and engraving in the rococo revival taste of the period.
Beautiful engraving in the form of a sea creature decorates the shaped blade. A scaly, dolphin-like creature morphs gracefully into scrolling leaves. The eyes scroll into foliate masses and the tail also becomes leaves. This is one of the finest fish slices we’ve had the privilege to sell.
The front and back of the hollow handle has bold beading at the top, a large shield in the middle above a star and leaves at the base. The front shield is engraved in a block style ‘E.H.P.’ The shield on the back has never been monogrammed.
This wonderful server measures 12.5 inches long, weighs 5 troy ounces and is in great condition. The back of the blade is stamped with Albert Coles’s trademarks.
