Here is an example of two great companies coming together to create an object of beauty. The sterling lid, made by Mauser, is wonderfully acid-etched in an art nouveau design of swirling branches and blossoming flowers. Within this design, in the center, is a heart-shaped cartouche with a lovely engraved 'AFB' monogram in a cursive style.
The bulbous glass jar is masterfully engraved in a design of two variations of flowers in bloom, in between which are two variations of butterflies in flight. Two butterflies are in a profile view and the other two are depicted with wings spread. The underneath has a deep cut hobstar.
Mauser, of New York City, made extremely high quality silver in the art nouveau style. Tuthill, the famous American glass maker, was from Middletown (near Corning) New York. Although small, the shop is generally considered to have produced some of the very best American cut and engraved glass. Click here to see cologne bottles from the same dresser set.
The lid is marked on the side 'STERLING, 925/1000 FINE' and with the model number '1005 and Muaser's trademark (rubbed). The underside of the glass bears the acid-etched signature of 'TUTHILL'. This lovely piece measures 6 inches wide by 2.5 inches high and is in excellent condition. Unusually large, this is the nicest powder jar we've had in years.
