Pair of Howard & Co. Sterling Candlesticks, New York, c. 1896
These large, exceptional candlesticks feature bold rocaille and foliate decoration with swirling feet and bulbous standards. Inspired by rococo designs from France during the second quarter of the eighteenth century, these magnificent candlesticks have a real presence.
Howard & Co. of New York made outstanding silver, generally in revival styles, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. J.P. Howard had a deep passion for excellent design and quality execution, as can be clearly seen in these candlesticks. It is no coincidence that he was in partnership with Arthur Stone - the preeminent artisan silversmith of the American arts & crafts movement - before Stone opened his own shop in Gardiner, Massachusetts.
These candlesticks measures 13 inches high by 7 inches across the base and are weighted, although clearly made of heavy gauge silver. Each one is marked ‘HOWARD & CO.’, ‘STERLING’, ‘NEW YORK’, ‘1896’ (the date they were made), and ‘148’ (the model number) and is monogrammed ‘EB’ in a foliate cursive style underneath. They are in excellent condition.
