This beautiful hand raised sauce boat rests on an oval pedestal foot with applied berries that attaches to the body with a bulbous hand chased foliate device. A
handle decorated with berries and leaves flows organically from one end. The original Jensen ladle with a similar complementary design accompanies this piece.
The enduring popularity of this design can be seen in a circa 1950 Jensen catalog which states: "This sauce boat and spoon are claimed to be the finest designed. Notice
how the ladle becomes part of the whole, creating the appearance of a second handle although of different design." It was available in two sizes, this being the larger size.
This berry pattern was designed by Jensen himself in 1920, and this piece bears his design mark along with Jensen shop marks that date it to 1925-32 and the
model number 177. The ladle is marked from the same period and numbers 141. Under the sauceboat it is inscribed 'Paula Carl Dohme' and the ladle is discretely
monogrammed 'P.C.D.' under the handle.
Paula Carl Dohme was the wife of Alfred R. L. Dohme, an important Baltimore chemist who taught at Johns Hopkins and was president of the Maryland
Pharmaceutical Association. They lived in the 'Charles J. Bonaparte' house at 5214 Roland Ave in Roland Park, Baltimore. This house has been greatly expanded and is
now the home of the Roland Park Country School.
The boat measures 4.75 inches high and 8.5 inches across (10.75 inches with the ladle in place). The ladle measures 8 inches long. Together they weigh 14.25 troy
ounces and are in excellent antique condition.
